Shotblasting & Shotpeening
Springs are subject to fatigue; fatigue cracks always occur on the surface of the springs. Ball blasting/ Shotpeening is a technique, in which the surface is shot with small balls.
This builds up compressive stresses on the surface of the material, as a result of plastic deformations. These compressive stresses push the fatigue cracks closed, as it were.
